P.A.R.T.S.
(Parents and their children Recovering Together Successfully) is a six to nine
month residential program for eight homeless women in recovery from substance
abuse and their children ages five and under.
Comprehensive services include housing, addiction treatment and
education, parenting skills training, independent living skills instruction, and
children’s services, as well as linkages to other critically needed services
in the community. Located in a 4-unit enclosed apartment building in Perth
Amboy, New Jersey, two families share each apartment, with the responsibility of
doing their own grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, and other household
management tasks. This program design provides an ideal setting for the
acquisition and reinforcement of independent living skills within a structured
treatment environment.
The
program is built around seven progressive phases ranging from orientation to
three months of aftercare. As part
of the recovery process, the Case Manager works with each resident to develop
her own unique treatment plan, which typically encompasses goals related to
staying clean, caring responsibly for children, learning to live independently,
improving mental and physical health, accessing outside resources, and planning
for a stable and productive life in the community. Part of the criteria of advancing through the phases is
active participation in the treatment plan.
The
Child Care Specialist works directly with the children to identify outstanding
emotional, medical, or developmental needs they may have, and an individual plan
is designed for each child. As the
family progresses through the program, the plans also evolve and integrate goals
that will help prepare for a successful graduation from the program.
Other community agencies offer auxiliary services to compliment those
received at P.A.RT.S.
