The New Jersey Association on
Correction operates a residential program for females on pre-release status from
the New Jersey Department of Corrections. Each
prospective resident must meet the standards for community release as
established by the DOC and be approved by NJAC staff.
The program permits eligible
offenders to serve the final months of their sentence prior to parole in the
community. This transitional period
aids in their adjustment to the community and reduces the likelihood of a return
to crime.
Upon arrival, residents develop
a program contract with staff that is used to gauge their success. Each contract includes the individual’s personal goals as
well as the need for employment, education, counseling and money management.
Employment or suitable vocational/educational placement must be attained
within a short time frame in order to remain in the program.
Counseling on an individual
basis and in groups is of primary importance.
Special attention is given to constructive use of leisure time with an
emphasis on volunteering in a community agency.
This type of experience helps to foster self esteem, develop positive
community contacts and contribute to the community.
Length
of stay is determined by the individual’s status and program completion
usually coincides with the resident’s parole date.
